Vermiculite is a natural mineral that has been heat-expanded into lightweight, golden-brown flakes. It is made from volcanic minerals and is completely inert, meaning it won’t break down or harm plant roots.
Designed to hold moisture while still allowing airflow, vermiculite helps create the ideal growing environment for strong, healthy roots. It prevents soil from drying out too quickly and keeps growing media light and fluffy.
Vermiculite is commonly mixed with other substrates, or it can be used alone for purposes such propagation or hydroponics.
How to use Vermiculite:
- Propagation medium: Vermiculite is a great medium to use for seed starting and/or root propagation as it holds onto moisture (but not too much), just enough for it to be readily available for fast growing new roots.
- Mixing into other potting medium: If you find your current potting medium is too dense or dry, you can add in vermiculite to improve soil aeration and water retention for the perfect potting mix!
